Call For New Members

The Guelph Barrier Free Committee’s (GBFC) mission is to help our community attain inclusion, equality, access and independence for all persons with disabilities residing in or visiting Guelph, by addressing accessibility related topics.
The Committee carries out its mission by seeking ways of sharing potential solutions that are integrated, raise awareness, and effectively build healthy Barrier Free communities.
GBFC is looking for new members who are excited by what we do and have a desire to actively contribute to the GBFC’s future.
We seek interested candidates who understand the value of relationship building through a positive and respectful approach and who identify with any of the following experience:

  • Understanding and identifying methods to remove barriers from the perspective of universal design and that increase accessibility for everyone,
  • Understanding barriers experienced by people with disabilities,
  • Could include personal lived experience as a person with disabilities, a caregiver to someone with disabilities, work and/or volunteer experience related to people with disabilities and/or studying accessibility/disability studies
  • Advocating and/or speaking in support of an idea or course of action from an ally perspective
  • Familiarity with the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA),
  • Advising, from a public education perspective, methods of identifying and removing barriers,
  • Advising on education methods/effective idea sharing,
  • Thinking from an inclusive lens; and/or
  • Advising on accessible website development and accessible graphic design
  • Could include an understanding of the WCAG 2.0 Level AA from the designer perspective or the user experience (UX)

Representation from all areas of Guelph is desired. The Guelph Barrier Free Committee is committed to ensuring our members reflect the community we serve.
Our recruitment processes strive to ensure a diversity of backgrounds and experiences are represented.
The GBFC meets 6 times per year, every second month (beginning in January) on the third Tuesday from 3 to 5 p.m. (EST).
Meetings are currently being held virtually through Microsoft Teams.
